[00:15.91]Look at questions 12 to 19.
[00:47.20]As you listen to the first part of the talk
[00:51.80]answer questions 12 to 17
[00:56.58]according to the information given in the talk.
[01:04.16]I know many of you students are the proud owners of your first motor vehicle
[01:10.45]and this evening .
[01:13.64]I want to talk to you about some of the things you can do
[01:18.84]to make sure your car or motorbike isn't stolen.
[01:23.75]I'll start with a few facts and figures to put you in the picture
[01:29.05]Car theft is a widespread problem.
[01:33.34]In this country alone one car is stolen every 32 seconds.
[01:40.23]That's almost a million cars each year
[01:44.62]And of those,40 percent are never recovered
[01:49.82]And don't think that just because your car might be a bit old
[01:54.91]and beaten-up looking no one will steal it.
[01:59.12]Any car can be stolen.Anywhere.
[02:03.12]Most thefts occur in residential areas,
[02:07.32]often from the front of the house or even from inside the garage
[02:14.11]Some areas that are especially dangerous are shopping centres and parking lots,
[02:19.70]particularly at sports events.
[02:23.39]Most car thieves don't need to break into the car.
[02:28.27]They usually gain entry through unlocked doors
[02:33.08]and many times they find the keys in the ignition.
[02:38.07]In fact, one in five stolen cars had the keys left in the car.
[02:44.36]Isn't that amazing?
[02:47.65]Twenty percent of drivers left the keys
[02:52.75]in the ignition of an unlocked car!
[02:56.85]Who steals cars?
[02:59.96]Well,there are basically two kinds of car or bike thieves:
[03:05.34]joyriders aged about 15 to 21,and professionals.
[03:11.63]This last group usually needs less than one minute to break not a locked car
[03:18.03]and they often steal cars to use in other crimes such as robberies.
[03:24.02]You are much less likely to get your car back
[03:28.40]if it's stolen by a professional,
[03:32.01]and if it's stolen by a joyrider
[03:35.90]chances are it'll be a wreck when you do get it back.
[03:40.50]Joyriders have a very high accident rate.
[03:46.40]STOP YOUR TAPE
[03:49.62]Before the final part of the talk, look at questions 18 and 19.
[03:57.51]Now you will hear the rest of the talk.
[04:02.29]Answer questions 18 and 19.
[04:07.28]What can you do to make sure your car isn't stolen?
[04:12.19]Well,first and most obviously.
[04:15.87]Lock the car when you leave it.
[04:19.94]That includes locking the boot or hatchback
[04:24.02]and making sure all the windows are closed
[04:28.41]Even a tiny gap allows a thief to insert a wire to prise open the lock button.
[04:36.11]Of course, don't leave the keys hanging in the ignition.
[04:42.02]And don't conceal a spare key inside or outside
[04:47.71]the car--thieves know all the hiding places.
[04:52.00]If your car breaks down, lock up before you go for help.
[04:57.27]Even if you can't start the car,a thief may be able to.
[05:02.55]Now since dusk to mid-evening are the peak hours for car theft,
[05:08.43]make sure you park in a well-lit area,
[05:12.63]preferably where there are plenty of passers-by,
[05:16.63]say near a busy store or a restaurant.
[05:20.94]Avoid leaving your keys with a garage or parking-lot attendant:
[05:26.35]choose the place you park yourself.
[05:30.34]Keep your driver's license and registration in your wallet or purse,
[05:35.73]not in the glove compartment of your car.
[05:40.01]You should also have a record of your car's vital statistics
[05:45.31]both in your wallet and somewhere at home.
[05:50.01]This can help with recovery in case of theft.
[05:54.93]And finally,it's a good idea to install some kind of safety device.
[06:01.40]There is a range available--from alarm systems that set off a buzzer or siren
[06:07.49]if an attempt is made to tamper with the car in any way,
[06:12.30]to fuel shout-off systems and time-delay ignition systems.
[06:18.98]Displaying a warning sticker will also help deter would-be thieves.
[06:25.88]They don't want to waste time on trying to steal a protected car.
[06:32.07]So,help us put car thieves out of business by using common sense,
[06:39.26]always locking your car, installing anti theft devices
[06:45.24]and cooperation with the police by reporting any attempt at theft.
[06:50.93]That is the end of Section 2.
[06:54.82]You now have half a minute to check your answers.
