[00:11.60]Listen to the tape then answer the question below.
[00:18.55]Did the crew of the Elkor find what they were looking for? Why?
[00:31.71]The salvage operation had been a complete failure.
[00:36.75]The small ship,Elkor, which had been searching the Barents Sea for weeks,
[00:43.83]was on its way home.
[00:46.99]A radio message from the mainland had been received by the ship's captain
[00:53.66]instructing him to give up the search.
[00:58.51]The captain knew that another attempt would be made later,
[01:03.69]for the sunken ship he was trying to find
[01:08.13]had been carrying a precious cargo of gold bullion.
[01:14.29]Despite the message, the captain of the Elkor decided to try once more
[01:21.37]The sea bed was scoured with powerful nets
[01:26.05]and there was tremendous excitement on board
[01:31.01]when a chest was raised from the bottom
[01:35.45]Though the crew were at first under the impression
[01:39.71]that the lost ship had been found,
[01:43.68]the contents of the chest proved them wrong.
[01:48.33]What they had in fact found was a ship
[01:53.19]which had been sunk many years before.
[01:57.45]The chest contained the personal belongings of a seaman,Alan Fielding
[02:06.09]There were books,clothing and photographs,
[02:10.64]together with letters which the seaman had once received from his wife
[02:17.01]The captain of the Elkor
[02:20.67]ordered his men to salvage as much as possible from the wreck
[02:26.52]Nothing of value was found,
[02:30.15]but the numerous items which were brought to the surface
[02:35.40]proved to be of great interest.
[02:39.24]From a heavy gun that was raised,
[02:43.00]the captain realized that the ship must have been a cruiser
[02:48.25]In another chest which contained the belongings of a ship's officer
[02:53.92]there was an unfinished letter
[02:57.58]which had been written on March 14th,1943
[03:03.22]The captain learnt from the letter
[03:06.88]that the name of the lost ship was the Karen.
[03:11.92]The most valuable find of all was the ship's log book,
[03:17.49]parts of which it was still possible to read.
[03:24.85]the captain was able to piece together all the information that had come to light.
[03:31.80]The Karen had been sailing in a convoy to Russia
[03:37.08]when she was torpedoed by an enemy submarine
[03:42.12]This was later confirmed by a naval official at the Ministry of Defence
[03:48.08]after the Elkor had returned home.
[03:52.54]All the items that were found were sent to the War Museum.
[03:57.87]This is the analysis of the text.以下为课文讲解。
